Shin Splints
Melbourne Muscular Therapies
Shin splints occur when muscles, tendons, and connective tissue around the tibia (shin bone) become solidified, calcified, or inflamed. Contributing factors include tight ankle musculature restricting mobility, running on hard surfaces, poor running technique with hard heel striking, and footwear changes affecting foot-ground contact.
Our treatment involves deep, slow, and sustained work to the muscles around the shin and ankle that are tight and solidified — including the exact area of your shin where the pain presents.
The second most important part of eliminating shin splints — and preventing them from returning — is strengthening the foot and ankle through barefoot rehabilitation training. Weakness and underactivity within the glutes is often the underlying cause of shin and calf issues, so we address the whole kinetic chain.
