HOW WE CAN HELP RELIEVE YOUR SHIN SPLINT PAIN!
Shin splints occur when muscles, tendons and connective tissue around the Tibia (shin bone) become solidified, calcified or inflammation is present in the area. This can be due to tight musculature around the ankle which inhibits ankle mobility and causes extra stress through the shin. Constantly running on hard surfaces, poor running technique (hard heel striking) and change in footwear that alters how the foot and ankle make contact with the ground can all be factors that cause shin splints.
Once the dysfunction and cause have been identified, you need to have deep, slow and sustained treatment to the muscles around the shin and ankle that are tight and solidified, but also the exact area of your shin where the pain presents. At Melbourne Muscular Therapies we aren’t afraid to treat on the shin bone, as this is that main area that the inflammation and pain presents.
The second most important part of eliminating shin splints, and to best prevent them from coming back is to strengthen the foot and ankle. This is done through our barefoot rehabilitation training, both in the gym and in our barefoot sprint classes. This training will increase the strength in your foot and ankle and retrain proper running technique.
